What is Solar?

Solar energy technology has been around for over a 100 years but is now emerging in the market as a clean renewable form of energy for your home or business. People are choosing solar energy because they want to reduce or eliminate their electric bill, they want a buffer against future electric rate increases, want to become less dependent on fossil fuels, and of course to help minimize environmental impacts. It is a safe clean form of energy.

Solar energy is simply converting sunlight into electricity and making this energy available to use in your home or business. Photovoltaic modules are made of photovoltaic cells, which when exposed to sunlight produce electricity in the form of a direct current (DC). Typically the DC current is converted to an alternating current, which is then compatible with standard residential homes and businesses in the United Sates. Depending on the size of the system, energy may be sent back to the grid and your meter will actually spin backwards and the customer is selling energy back to the grid!

Photovoltaic modules typically are mounted on the roof and oriented towards "true" South in order to maximize the solar potential. Modules may also be pole mounted or mounted on the ground. It depends on customer preference and property limitations. Modules now have a life expectancy of 25+ years, which will ensure payback on equipment costs.

DC energy created by the PV panels runs into the inverter and creats an alternating current (AC). Then AC current is metered prior to heading back into the grid.
